John Carew was presented with this year's anti-racism award by SRTRC (Norway) at the Norwegian Players Union 'Player of the Year' ceremony. Carew has been the main star of the campaign in Norway since its start in year 2000. He is always willing to lend his name, autograph and photo to our work and also using his position to get massive media attention to the problem of racism in football. Carew has been a key figure in highlighting the problem of racism in football. He has been keen to lend his support of Show Racism the Red Card since the organisation started in Norway five years ago. Carew was presented with the award by the former Sunderland captain and SRTRC worker in the UK, Gary Bennett. Two of the young winners of our latest schools competition were on the podium displaying their winning banner. Carew also won the prestigious "Player of the Year". At the press conference Carew asserted that he was even more proud of winning the anti-racism award as racism is a problem in society and more important than football. The Norwegian Show Racism The Red Card campaign is run by the Norwegian Players Union and Norwegian People's Aid.
The Norwegian lottery EXTRA, funds projects in the areas of research, prevention and rehabilitation. Every year £15m is handed out to such projects, Show Racism The Red Card (Norway) was started in year 2000 with funds from EXTRA. T The project has managed to deliver the message in a creative and engaging manner, but has also touched on people's attitudes and started processes of change. The project has effectively used role models and idols in its work, it has had the sports community, schools and society in general as its arena, and has been a visible project all over Norway." The winner of the £9,000 award was Show Racism The Red Card. |
