Crystal Palace Event, Selhurst Park

March 2006

This year's Show Racism The Red Card event took place on Wednesday, March 17 at the Selhurst Park Football ground. The event jointly organised with Croydon Council was attended by local schoolchildren, their teachers and representatives from some community organisations. The Mayor of Croydon attended this year's event as did some Council Members and Staff who were present to lend their support to the anti-racism campaign.

Eagle players Aki Rihilahti and Tom Soares the midfielder along with ex-England international Chris Powell, who plays for Charlton Athletic were present to answer questions on racism from the young people and signed autograghs. Also present were Gary Bennett, ex-Sunderland player, coach and manager as was Mary Lawmann from Croydon Council.

The Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Maggie Mansell and Councillor Mark Watson spoke about the ills of racism and other hate crimes and why we should all work together to kick racism out of society.

FURIOUS: For Us Respect is our Ultimate Statement, gave a rapid rendition of positive rap with audience participation which animated and excited the children and other guests and left the audinece wanting more. The SRTRC video was shown followed by questions and answers session. A prize, an autographed football was awarded to the pupil who posed the most challenging question to the panel while every pupil who asked a question was given a SRTRC wristband. As usual, 'goody bags' were handed out including the current Palace Anti- Racism Team Poster.

A very exciting day was had by all and our huge thanks go to the Palace staff and everyone who participated, but particularly to the players who took time out to make the day an enjoyable one for all.
