EventsChelsea FCSeptember 2006 The first Show Racism the Red Card event of the new football season; was hosted by Chelsea FC at their Stamford Bridge Stadium. 116 school children from local schools attended to ask questions of a stellar panel. Including Chelsea's newest signing, Ashley Cole, Paul Canoville (the first black player to play for Chelsea), Dave Bassett (SRTRC Honorary Patron), Sue Dawson (MK Dons Exec), Michael Cole (Chelsea FITC), Dave McDermott (Football Foundation) and Colleen Harris (Freelance journalist). Ged Grebby spoke on behalf of SRTRC and Kim Burns who is our principal volunteer in London, chaired the event. The question and answer session was superb, with questions ranging from the England vs Spain racist incidents to Paul Canoville's experiences playing in the 80s and being abused by his own fans. Dave McDermott selected one of the people who asked a question as the winner of two tickets for a Chelsea FC game and a signed England shirt (by Ashley Cole). All the young people who asked questions received a SRTRC wristband. The young people all had the opportunity of a tour of the ground before or after the event. During the event the audience saw the SRTRC DVD and were entertained by some freestyle rap from Ian Solomon. Press coverage of the occasion was extensive with TV crews from, Sky Sports News, ITV and BBC (London tonight) all covering the event. Also in attendance were two photographers from press associations and some radio correspondents. This event was a great way to start SRTRC's tenth season of activity and our thanks go to all the guests and in particular to Chelsea FC, Pippa Hancock and Michael Cole, for their help in organising the event. |
