Yeovil Town FC

17 April 2007

Yeovil Town became the sixth club of the 2006-07 season to host their very first Show Racism the Red Card educational event for local schools. SRTRC worked with Somerset County Council to organise this event with the club and an audience of around 100 people were in attendance to see a copy of the SRTRC DVD and take part in a Question and Answer session with the panel. Prior to the Q&A the DVD was screened and was well received by the audience as they thought of their questions on racism in sport and society.

The panel featured two Yeovil Town first team players, Nathan Jones and Ishmael Welsh, two representatives of Somerset County Council, Cathy Bakewell, Leader of the Council and Councillor Claire Gordon, as well as SRTRC’s own, Gary Bennett and Sunil Patel, Campaign Coordinator for Wales.

All of the questions during the Q&A were answered and handled well. As usual, all of the young people who asked a question of the panel received a SRTRC wristband. Gary had the unenviable job of choosing his favourite question of the day. Yeovil Town FC had kindly donated an official players tracksuit for the lucky winner, who also had their photograph taken with the players at the end of the event. Both Nathan and Ishmael stayed on to sign autographs and pose for photos with members of the audience. Some press coverage had preceded the event and BBC local radio did some interviews with people at the event.

SRTRC would like to thank all who attended the event, especially the young people from local schools and the panel. Big thanks also due to Yeovil Town FC for hosting the event and particularly Adrian Hopper for his help in organising it and to Somerset County Council, particularly Zoe Larder for her help organising the young peoples attendance and taking photos of the event!
