Peterborough United FC

24 September 2007

Show Racism the Red Card's sixth event of the new season was held at Peterborough United's London Road Stadium, and happened to be the first SRtRC event that 'The Posh' had hosted. Around 50 young people from two local primary schools were in attendance to see a screening of the SRtRC film and take part in a Q&A session on racism with two players from the club, Micah Hyde and Adam Newton. On arrival the young people were presented with a SRtRC goody bag which included the new Peterborough United FC / SRtRC poster, SRtRC magazine and wristband.

Mohammed Mehmet, the Director of Children's Services at Peterborough City Council, said some words of welcome and support for the campaign and later took part in the Q&A session which followed a sceening of the SRtRC film, which I think was well received by the audience. Also taking part in the Q&A with the players and Mohammed was SRtRC's own, Kieron Brady. SRtRC had provided three T-Shirts for the players to sign and which Kieron awarded to his favourite questions at the end of the session. The event received coverage from the club's website, a local newspaper and radio station. Javid Ahmed from Unity FC also said a few words on behalf of his organisation who are an anti-racist youth football team who have players from many different nationalities based in Peterborough, we will look to publicise their work on our website too.

Many thanks go to Peterborough United FC for hosting the day's event, particularly to Phil Adlam and Terry for their help in both organising the event and help on the day, thanks also go to Micah Hyde and Adam Newton for participating and giving their time to the event. Thanks also to Peterborough City Council for being involved and to Mohammed and Javid for taking part. Thank you to both of the schools who attended and the young people for their thoughtful questions and attention.
