News in 200605th February 2006Amir Khan scoops top awardBoxer Amir Khan has been named sports personality of the year at a ceremony to honour British Asian sporting talent. The 18-year-old has become one of the nation's best-loved sportsmen since winning the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. The Sony Entertainment Sports Personality of the Year Awards were held at the Hilton Hotel on London's Park Lane in front of a star-studded audience on Saturday night. Much sought after eight-year-old football prodigy Nikhil Rawal was named young sports personality of the year. Barclays Premiership duo Chelsea and Arsenal are both fighting over the signature of the youngster, from Harrow, north-west London Premiership bound He has been offered a two-year contract to join Arsenal's under-nines academy but is currently training with Chelsea. The award for up-and-coming star went to 26-year-old Saima Hussain, from Keighley, west Yorkshire, the first ever Muslim female to play rugby league for Yorkshire. Other winners include seven-year-old golfer Kiran Matharu from Leeds, who was named female junior sports personality of the year. The male award went to wrestler Jatinder Singh Rkhra, 16, from Slough, who will represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics. The outstanding achievement award was given to athletics coach Ajit Singh Kalirai, aged 78. Weighlifting coach Gian Singh Cheema, from Tipton, West Midlands, won the coach of the year award.
