News in 200715 March 2007Colchester United FC eventOur campaign headed down to the east coast to Championship side Colchester United FC who hosted a Show Racism the Red Card event at Shrub End Community & Sports Centre. Colchester United stars Chris Iwelumo and George Elokobi joined the campaign Co-odinator Sunil Patel on the panel to answer questions from children from the King’s Ford Primary School, their was also a guest speaker from Essex County Council. The children heard the players own personal experiences of racism and also watched a DVD to learn how to recognise and challenge racist behaviour. Following the film, the children were encouraged to ask Chris and George questions on racism in football and society. The players handled all the questions comprehensively and had the children engrossed during the Question and Answer session. The overall winner of the best question received a t-shirt signed by the 2 players, along with a club DVD and signed poster. All the pupils then had the opportunity to get an autograph from both players before heading outside for a bit of football coaching from the Colchester United Community Sports Trust coaches. After the training session, the children were rewarded with free Colchester Utd and England posters, wristbands, U’s programmes and a special ‘Red Card’ magazine Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank both the players from Colchester United FC for their participation, also Krista Hultquist from Colchester United Community Sports Trust for organising the event and the involvement of the players and Essex County Council for their continued support. |
