Gateshead Council Chamber was the venue for a day of fun, entertainment and anti-racist education.
The council chamber at Gateshead Civic Centre was the venue for a day of fun, entertainment and anti-racist education hosted by Show Racism the Red Card. In attendance were pupils from local primary schools and special guests: current Newcastle United players Danny Simpson and Leon Best.
After a warm welcome from MP for Blaydon, Dave Anderson, young poeple and delegates were informed about the SRtRC campaign and the work being delivered in gateshead and were lead through activities and games which explored racism and stereotypes.
Amandla Esandla, a South African acapella group were next up, and they certainly didn't disappoint. Student and adults alike were wowed by their incredible energy, talent and character as they sang some traditional South African melodies and some more well known hits. The Lion Sleeps Tonight got feet tapping and hands clapping as pupils were encouraged to join in the fun.
A viewing of the SRtRC DVD was extremely well received and increased the pupils knowledge and awareness of the dangers and complexities of racism, preparing them nicely for a Q&A session with a panel of distinguished guests including SRtRC Chief Executive, Ged Grebby, SRtRC football coaches Curtis Fleming, John Anderson and Olivier Bernard and current Newcastle United stars Leon Best and Danny Simpson.
An array of fantastic prizes including Newcastle and Sunderland match tickets were awarded for participation and best questions and all pupils left with a SRtRC goody bag and signed Newcastle and England posters.
Words of thanks and support from Gateshead Council's diversity officer, Nitin Shukla and an encore from Amandla Esandla closed what was a very exciting and succesful event. And students from Gateshead College interviewed the young people and the footballers to capture the key messages of the day.
Huge thanks to everybody who supported the event and made it possible.
