SRtRC launched its NEW WORLD CUP 2010 ENGLAND POSTER at St James' Park yesterday. It was a celebration of the World Cup being held in South Africa this year and in support of the FA’s England 2018 bid. It was the final launch in a series of events held at each of the candidate host cities in the bid to bring the World Cup to England in 2018. Please visit our news pages learn more about our other launch events.
125 pupils from schools in North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Gateshead attended a morning carousel of anti-racist workshops with a World Cup theme. As part of these workshops they were taken on an exciting tour of the 52,387 capacity stadium.
After lunch there was a special Q&A with Toon legend and long-time patron of the campaign John Beresford. John spoke of his experiences of racism as a player and gave the young people some valuable advice. Next the young people watched the Show Racism the Red Card anti-racist film featuring Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o, Lilian Thuram, Freddie Eastwood, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba.
The day's events had prepared the audience for a final Q&A session with a special panel consisting of NUFC legends Olivier Bernard and John Anderson, former Middlesbrough players Curtis Fleming and Dean Gordon, members of the Newcastle United Women's team, Jimmy Nelson, NUFC's Education Manager and the Deputy Leader of Newcastle City Council, David Faulkner. There were some fantastic questions and the best three won signed SRtRC prizes. Every pupil who attended left with an autographed England World Cup 2010 poster, Newcastle United poster and a SRtRC goody bag.
SRtRC would like to thank all who participated and in particular Newcastle United FC for hosting the event and Unite for sponsoring this launch.
