As well as having the opportunity to watch the squad train Amber got to meet and interview SRtRC Honorary Patron and MUFC legend, Ryan Giggs about his experiences of racism. MUTV filmed the encounter and you can see the footage here.
SRtRC caught up with Amber after the visit, which was also attended by her mum and the North West Regional Secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Avis Gilmore. Amber told us:
“I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone at SRTRC and Manchester United for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity. Interviewing Ryan Giggs was amazing, I was really nervous but he was so friendly and soon made me feel at ease. After meeting Ryan we watched all of the team warming up in the gym and then followed them out to the training pitch. I can't believe that I have met Sir Alex Ferguson.
The best bit of the day was definitely meeting the team when they signed my shirt before they went onto the training pitch. Watching them train was a fabulous experience that I think that I will always remember. Thank you very much."
Thanks to the support of the NUT, Amber’s school also won a new laptop and football clubs and other organisations made sure that there were great prizes for all the winners of the competition, including match tickets, signed balls, signed shirts, computer games and much else besides.
The SRtRC Anti-Racist School Competition was a massive success, with over 600 schools taking part across England. Tens of thousands of young people produced work and a total of 102 young people around England received prizes for their entries. SRtRC would like to thank all of the schools and young people who took part and the sponsors, football clubs and other organisations who support the competition.
Show Racism the Red Card will be releasing details of the 2010 Anti-Racist School Competitions in England, Scotland and Wales on the website very shortly. Watch this space!
