Eighth North-East Local Authority signs up to Show Racism the Red Card
Gisborough Hall was the prestigious venue for yesterday’s launch of an exciting new partnership between Redcar & Cleveland and Show Racism the Red Card.

Redcar & Cleveland is the eighth local authority in the North East to form a partnership with SRtRC. In the 2009 – 2010 academic year SRtRC will undertake 22 educational visits to schools in which children participate in workshops educating young people on the subject of racism and why it should not be tolerated, along with the opportunity to undertake a fun fitness session with our former professional footballers.
116 school children from Redcar & Cleveland schools attended the luxurious venue, along with around 40 adult delegates from the local authority and partner organisations.
After orange juice in the conservatory the pupils, who came from Handale, Newcomen, Nunthorpe and South Bank Primary Schools listened to some opening words from Redcar & Cleveland’s Cabinet Member for Community Protection, Dave McLuckie, and Simon Dale, Redcar & Cleveland Council’s Director of Area Management. These positive words were followed by a screening of Show Racism the Red Card’s main educational film.
After the film everyone had the chance to move around the room as they took part in some anti-racism educational activities led by a seasoned supporter of the campaign, David Foster. This was followed by a question and answer session with a distinguished panel that included ex-Middlesbrough FC players Dean Gordon and Curtis Fleming, both now coaching with Show Racism the Red Card. The young people came up with some tough questions for the panel including “where did racism start?” and “when will racism end?”
A successful and enjoyable morning concluded with a few words from Mal Fitzgerald who chairs Redcar & Cleveland’s Stronger Partnerships Programme which provided funding for Show Racism the Red Card’s work in the borough.
