Show Racism the Red Card in Wales

Role model Giggs earns OBE for Charity work

18 August 2007

Another day another medal for Ryan Giggs but his OBE will take pride of place for the man who has won more top flight titles than anyone in history.

The award in the Queens Honours List will no doubt have taken into account his charity work, aiding the campaign Show Racism the Red Card to rid football of racism, plus his role as a UNICEF representative working to eliminate the use of land mines.

This is a side of Ryan that does not gain the publicity his impressive career have won him.

In short, Ryan has become a genuine role model for his sport. Handling his fame and the pressures of 16 years of top-flight football with focus, professionalism and dignity.

At his last training session for Wales, he came over to meet the winners of our recent schools competition on the same day he announced his retirement from International football. On such an important day for Ryan, he took time out for autographs and photos with the youngsters making it a day they will never forget in their lives.

Ryan first showed his support for our campaign in the late 90’s appearing on our Educational DVD and is one of many top stars involved with the campaign.
